DTL

The Digital Trust Label (DTL) is a Swiss consumer-facing label for digital services, launched in January 2022 by the Swiss Digital Initiative, a Geneva-based foundation.

It certifies an individual digital service, product, or app (not the company) against a catalog of 35 criteria in four areas: security, data protection, reliability, and fair user interaction, with a 2024 update adding criteria on the use of artificial intelligence. Early adopters included Swiss Re, Swisscom, Swiss Post, Cisco, and wefox.

In January 2025 the foundation handed the label over to SGS, its long-standing audit partner, which now operates it as the Digital Trust Label Certification.

The label is voluntary and market-driven. In writing, an applicant needs a description of the service and its data flows, a privacy notice and data processing documentation that match the service's behavior, security policies and evidence (vulnerability management, access control, encryption, incident handling), reliability and availability information, terms that meet the fair interaction criteria (no dark patterns, clear pricing and cancellation), and, where AI is used, documentation of how automated decisions are explained and overseen.

An auditor reviews the documentation and tests the service against each criterion before the label is issued.
